Each with a tripartite shaft cast with female herms with floral garlands, headed by an acanthus-wrapped shaft issuing a foliate scroll-cast stem flanked by fluted vine-wrapped branches and terminating in circular drip-pans and nozzles decorated with garlands, on a circular spreading shaft decorated with acanthus and a plinth with Vitruvian scroll frieze and foliate pattera-cast sabots, the branches associated

Lot Essay

The design for these candlesticks has traditionally been attributed to the architect Jean-Demosthéne Dugourc (1749-1825) on the basis of a drawing in the Musèe des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (GF 21 no. 38.378). It is included in an album of designs for furniture subsequently delivered to both Madame Elisabeth and the comte de Provence and inscribed Dessiné par J.D. Dugourc, architecte et dessinateur Du Cabinet de Monsieur Frère Du Roi. Paris. 1790.
