Lot Essay

John Morgan, a merchant in Singapore, was arrested by John Crawfurd, the Resident of Singapore, for shipping a consignment including salt-petre, firearms and canons to Thailand without the Resident's consent. The arrest was made in August 1824 (not October as stated on the print). Morgan's fellow merchants intervened to save him from being sent to Calcutta for trial. Cruikshank's satirical depiction of the arrest appears to have been produced either for, or in support of, John Morgan.
