Lot Essay

The present work, with a masterly use of richness in both texture and colour, demonstrates why Wolfe was often referred to as the 'English Matisse'. The exotic interior with its rich furnishings and patterns is an evocative foil for the silver-grey tailored suit of the elegant subject.

Curtis Thomas was the English diplomat to Morocco. He met Edward Wolfe in Tangiers, where the present work was painted.
