While no similar paintings have come to light, the constituent elements here suggest a date in the late 1920's to 1930's. The layering of textured strokes in the mountains, the contrasts of light and dark ink in both the foreground and background, the shading used along crinkled cloud edges and the composition of the mountain range are all suggestive of such a date. The broadly applied grey to define the darkened sky and the earth mound of the foreground are highly reminiscent of Taikan's 1910 "Flowing waters handscroll" (Yamatane Art Museum), one of his first important ink works.
