The white king stamped JAQUES LONDON, seven pieces with Victorian diamond registration labels, dated 1849, in a mahogany box with a green label ENTERED NO.1184, and JAQUES, LONDON
The king -- 3½in. (9cm.) high; the pawn -- 1¾in. (4.5cm.) high

Lot Essay

In 1849 the 'Staunton' playing set was first registered and produced by John Jacques, Hatton Garden, and sold at the shop of William Leuchars of Piccadilly. A set with printed diamond registration marks for 1849 was sold in these Rooms, 22 November 2005, lot 526.
