Lot Essay

Harry Andrews was one of the leading actors of his generation, performing at the Old Vic, the Arts Theatre and the West End stage before the war.

After peace broke out, he went to Stratford and worked with the greats of his era such as Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, Vivian Leigh and John Gielgud.

Following this period he started working in films, appearing as Darius in Richard Burton's Alexander the Great, and in Moby Dick, with Gregory Peck. He developed a popular following, and extended his range to include strong military types, as portrayed in such films as Ice Cold in Alex.
