Rectangular with reeded sides and engine-turned base, the cover inscribed "Presented to William Ainslie Esqr. by the inhabitants of Badenoch as a mark of gratitude for supplying them with meal at a moderate rate during unpropitious seasons, June 1839," within an engine-turned border -- 3 3/8ins. Badenoch is a district of south-east Inverness-shire, principally a wild mountainous tract with hills & forests containing some of the best deer country in the Scottish Hihglands. From 1452 it was bestowed upon the 1st earl of Huntly & the marquess of Huntly still holds the title of lord of Badenoch.
