Lot Essay

Mary Linwood was perhaps the best known needlewoman of her day, recognized by the Royal Family and even Napoleon, who granted her the Freedom of Paris in 1803. She spent her working life as a schoolmistress, but is best remembered for her masterly embroideries, many full sized copies of old masters and contemporary prints. Her subjects ranged from landscapes to Lady Jane Grey, and were exhibited in London before her death in 1845. Her technique involved using stitches like brushstrokes to evoke a painterly feel.
