Further details
Sir William Bull, 1st Baronet, MP (1863-1931) had wide and varied interests and was deeply involved in the Borough of Hammersmith. He was elected to London County Council as Hammersmith's representative in 1892, and in 1900 became MP for the borough and served as MP for Hammersmith South from 1918-29. He was Parliamentary Private Secretary to Walter Long when the latter was Chief Secretary for Ireland and then first Lord of the Admiralty. Bull urged the case for the building of a channel tunnel and supported the movement to extend voting rights to women. Amongst the many positions he held Bull was Maltravers Herald Extraordinary and Principal of the Imperial Society of Knights Bachelor, from whom he received the aforementioned chain of office. Bull's proximity to the sources of power and his many interests provided extensive material for his diaries (on long term loan to Churchill College, Cambridge) which are a valuable archive for comment on major issues, particularly Ireland, and political gossip.
