La Tâche Grand Cru--Vintage 1991
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Tasting Note: 23hl/ha, 1428 cases. First noted at the opening tasting in London, February 1994. GBP 341 per bottle duty-paid. Deep, far more intense than Romanée-Conti or Richebourg; rich, earthy Pinot aroma, sweet, spicy - after three hours, fragrant but elusive; very assertive, concentrated, good balance, impressive and with charm. Next at Wagner's vertical in 1998: deep, fine colour; sweet, rich, varietal. After an hour, delicious strawberry-like fruit, after four hours, rich, jammy fruit; medium sweet, fullish, astringent finish but held well. The following year, a magnum (served blind - I thought it was Richebourg): lovely colour, touch of cherry red; fragrant and rather cherry-like Pinot nose; deliciously sweet, glorious fruit, lissome, dry finish. Excellent with cheese, but needs time. Last noted dining with Karl-Heinz Wolf at his Landart restaurant in Tanglberg, Austra in April 1999 ***(**) Astonishingly attractive, both the wine and the setting. M.B.
