Lot Essay

George Cochran Lambdin was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and went on to study in Munich and Paris before settling into Philadelphia where he painted for the majority of his career. During his lifetime, Lambdin was a popular figure well-known for his portraits of women and children and for his floral still lifes. In a review of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Annual Exhibition in the June 1858 issue of The Crayon notes Reveriei as "... a superior work. For simplicity of character, fidelity of sentiment, fine drawing and color, no picture surpasses it in the gallery."
