Bilston Garden Furniture designed by Edward Bawden, 1956.
Commissioned by Bilston Foundries Ltd, and sold through high-end shops including Harrods, Knightsbrdige, this set of cast-iron garden furniture was designed by the accomplished painter and designer, Edward Bawden (1903-89). A student at the Cambridge School of Art from 1922-25, Bawden studied under Paul Nash, and went on to design decorations for Wedgewood, and textiles for the Orient Steam Navigation Co. More importantly, Bawden was one of the first Official War Artists to be appointed during the Second World War, where he made numerous evocative paitings recording the war effort in Europe and the Middle East. The advertising leaflet from 1956 describes this set, one of which was used by Churchill, as 'an ornamental seat unique in its gracefulness, and as distinguished by its careful finish as by its outstanding appearance'.
