IN THE MANNER OF GILLOWS, THIRD QUARTER 18TH CENTURY
The rectangular moulded cornice with triangular open pediment above a blind fretwork frieze and a pair of panelled doors enclosing a yellow material-lined interior with a later brass hanging-rail, above two simulated drawers and two part cedar-lined long drawers, on ogee bracket feet, originally with slides, the two short drawers now simulated and the interior adapted for hanging clothes, the handles apparently original, the backboard inscribed in chalk 'WITHERSPOON' and Christie's stock number 'CL588', with cuts to cornice, three feet replaced

Lot Essay

The flowered-paterae in the upper hollow-moulded corners correspond to bookcase doors illustrated in a 1771 design in the Estimate Sketch Books of Robert and Richard Gillow of Lancaster (L. Boynton, ed., Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 137). A related large breakfront clothes-press was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 12 February 1998, lot 337.
