Lot Essay
This dumb waiter can be firmly attributed to Gillingtons on account of its design which closely relates to another Irish brass-mounted dumb waiter, by Gillingtons, sold, Christie's, London, 14 November 1996, lot 79. This dumb waiter, stamped Gillingtons, is very similar in conception, with the minor difference of additional brass-mounts. It also displays a numbered stamp '4224', like the previous and current lots.
This form of 'Dumb waiter with two tops' features in the 1819 Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster, and a pair attributed to this firm are listed at Mere Hall, Cheshire in 1840 and was sold by the late Mrs. Helen Langford-Brooke, Mere Hall, Cheshire, Christie's house sale, 23 May 1994, lot 102. Another pair, also featuring reed-enriched pillars and 'claws' and likely to have been manufactured in Dublin probably by Gillingtons, were formerly in the collection of the Earl of Carrick at Mount Juliet, Ireland and sold, Christie's, London, 17 November 1983, lot 98.
