Lot Essay

This open form of games-table design is unusual. Two comparable tables were sold in the sale of Two Late Regency Collectors, Christie's, London, 9 June 2005, lots 22 and 23. These tables were purchased by Philip John Miles (1773-1845) at the Wanstead House sale in 1822 for Leigh Court, Bristol. They were then purchased back for the Strafford family at Christie's, London, 27 April 1900 by Francis, 5th Earl of Strafford for the collection at Wrotham Park, Hertfordshire. These tables display a similar arrangement of candle stands at each corner set into a baize-lined playing surface, with elaborate masks set at each corner angle and cabriole legs carved with acanthus and massive claw feet.
