No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VA… Read more LES BENNETT Lesley Donald Bennett was born in Wood Green on January 10th 1918 and joined Spurs as an amateur in August 1935 from Tottenham Juniors. He was 'farmed-out' to Northfleet United before becoming a professional with Spurs in May 1939. The war then intervened and he was a guest player for Torquay United and Distillery before resuming his career at White Hart Lane after the war ended. In season 1946-47 he was the club's top goalscorer with 16 goals from 40 appearances. He was also the club's top goalscorer in seasons 1948-49 and 1951-52. As part of the famous 'push and run' Spurs side he helped them to the Division 2 Championship in season 1949-50 and to the Division 1 Championship the following season. After playing some 294 League and Cup games, scoring 116 goals, Bennett joined West Ham United in December 1954. Thereafter he joined Romford Town and became Clacton Town manager in July 1956. Spurs won their first-ever Division 1 Championship this season with 60 points, Manchester United being runners-up on 56 points. This medal forms part of a unique 'double' as Spurs won the Division 2 Championship (see following lot) the previous season, 1949-50 and in their 'first' season they went on to win the Division 1 Championship
