Lot Essay

A similar Anglo-Indian chess set was sold in these Rooms, 28 March 2006, lot 576. This unusual example of a playing set carved with stylised acanthus leaves over a more typical Staunton style design, was probably commissioned for the English market. For a similar example see Jessie McNab Dennis, A Selection from the Gustavus A. Pfeiffer Collection, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1968, plate 92.
