PROBABLY FROM THE JOHN CALVERT WORKSHOP, CIRCA 1840
One side stained red, the other natural, the kings and queens with pierced petal collars, the knights carved as characterful horses' heads
The king -- 3 7/8in. (9.8cm.) high; the pawn -- 2in. (5cm.) high

This pattern is often attributed to John Calvert, a Master of the Worshipful Company of Turners, established from circa 1795 until the mid 19th century. See Gareth Williams, Master Pieces, Apple Press, 2000, page 47.
