Lot Essay

For a comparable Nuremberg bone 18th century example see Bloomsbury, May 2006, lot 110 and The Ernst Boehlen Chess Collection, Phillips, London, November 1998, lot 56. It is noted, that these sets have traditionally been attributed to Dieppe carvers, however, current opinion suggests these are more likely to produced by German carvers. An ivory Geislingen example, dated circa 1760, is illustrated in Hans und Barbara Holländer, Schach Partie Durch Zeiten und Welten, Hamburg, Exhibition Catalogue, 2005, fig.123, page 154.
