Signed to the lower right corner R.F.S.P and B. Barzotti, with paper label to the reverse inscribed REV. FABBCA. D. S. PIETRO IN VATICANO and numbered 952 Pompeiana con Vasa £3200, within a giltwood acanthus and laurel-carved frame
The plaque: 24¾ x 12 in. (63 x 30.5 cm.); The frame: 33¼ x 20¾ in. (84.5 x 53 cm.)

Lot Essay

Working from his studio located at 57 via del Babuino, Biagio Barzotti was an active mosaicist for the Vatican workshops until the end of the 19th century. On occasion, the artist was commissioned to render works for Pope Leo XIII (d.1903), the most notable of which depicts the Pontiff blessing a congregation at St. Peter's Basilica.
The abbreviation R.F.S.P. stands for Reveranda Fabbrica di S. Pietro, the institution under whose jurisdiction the mosaic workshop operated.
