Lot Essay
The women in the forest is a fine representation of Le Mayeur's ideas about rendering colour and light. In fact, Le Mayeur chose the end of the day. This striking painting is executed a little later, probably at the beginning of the Fifties. The face of the central Pollok is painted in a very delicate manner.
Val D'Auvray acquired the painting from Le Mayeur in the late 1940's when he was engaged in engineering projects in Southeast Asia, primarily in Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia. He was a frequent guest in Le Mayeur's home, enjoying the hospitality of the artist and his wife as they drank, dined, swam and recounted stories of the past and present.
