A Soshu-School Tanto in Lacquer Mounts
Nanbokucho period (14th century), inscribed Masamune
Sugata [configuration]: hirazukuri, iori-mune
Kitae [forging pattern]: itame in a flowing pattern of jinie with chikei
Hamon [tempering pattern]: notare with sunagashi of nie Boshi [tip]: ko-maru
Horimono [carving]: marudome on the omote, futasu-hi on the ura
Nakago [tang]: ubu with one peg hole, iriyama-gata
Habaki [collar]: single, silver
Nagasa [length from tip to beginning of tang]: 27.3cm.
Motohaba [width at start of tempered edge]: 2.7cm.
Koshirae [set of mounts]: Aikuchi tanto mount with Ko-Mino fittings; a black-lacquer saya with diagonal bands of ray skin polished flush with the lacquer surface and lined in gold hiramaki-e; shakudo nanako kozuka with a gold frame and designed with Benkei and Ushiwakamaru (Yoshitsune) in combat rendered in gold and shakudo takazogan, the blade sigend Toyokuni daijo Chikashige; gold and shakudo persimmon menuki; 44.5cm. long
