A Namban-Style Export Lacquer Container for Wafers for the Eucharist
Momoyama period (17th century)
Circular and set on three scroll feet and designed in inlaid mother-of-pearl on black lacquer with a stylized flower design, based on a Buddhist wheel, surrounded by a stiff-leaf and link band in the center, the edge of the cover decorated with a similar leaf and link design, the canted edge inlaid with crushed aogai and the sides of the box with a mother-of-pearl ground pattern, underside decorated in aogai; interior dusted with sparse crushed shell inlays
