Lot Essay

Hoon Kwak graduated from Seoul National University in 1963 and received his MFA from California State University in 1982. He had one-person exhibitions at the Karl Bornstein Gallery, Santa Monica, in 1985 and 1989, the Harcourts Contemporary, San Francisco, in 1986, the Works Gallery, Costa Mesa, California in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1994, and the MacQuarie Galleries, Sydney, in 1990 and 1992. His work was exhibited at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Kwachon, in 1993, and at the Birmingham Museum of Art in 1996. In Seoul, he had one-person exhibitions at the Pyo Gallery in 1996 and 2006 and at the Kumho Museum of Art in 1998 and 2000. He had one-person exhibitions at the Charles Cowles Gallery, New York, in 1998, in the exhibition "Contemplation," Rong Bao Zhai Gallery, Beijing, in 2000, and at the National Art Museum of China, Beijing, in 2005. He had numerous group exhibitions from 1980 to 2004. Kwak's work is in the collection of the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, Columbia Pictures Corp., Los Angeles, the Ho-Am Art Museum, Seoul (Leeum Samsung Museum of Art), Art Sonje Museum, Kyoungju, Sonje Museum of Art, Seoul, Orange County Museum of Art, California, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Arkansas Museum of Art, among others. Hoon Kwak lives and works in Los Angeles.
