Padds, or "personal access data devices" were used a lot on Star Trek: The Next Generation and the other shows. Numerous types of padds were seen, as such LeVar Burton wanted his character of Geordi La Forge to have a distinctive padd, since he was chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise.
