Lot Essay

Gene Roddenberry originally designed the Star Trek television format so that space suits and similar expensive items would not usually be needed. Indeed, except for "The Tholian Web," in Star Trek: The Original Series episodes never required space suits. Even the higher-budgeted Star Trek: The Next Generation did not show space suits until these costumes were made for Star Trek: First Contact. Once made, however, they made appearances on both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, where they added production value that neither show could have otherwise afforded.
