Lot Essay

Most bridge dedication plaques featured a ship's motto, printed at the bottom of the plaque. In the case of the Enterprise, it was usually to boldly go where no man (or one) has gone before. For the Starship Columbia's bridge plaque, the motto was Audentes fortuna juvat, a quote from Virgil that translates as Fortune favors the bold. Virgil's quote was the unofficial motto of NASA's Exploration Systems Mission Directorate, the group responsible for designing and building the next generation of spacecraft that will return astronauts to the moon, then go on to Mars and beyond.
