Lot Essay

Drawing on his experience from earlier Star Trek space suits, Robert Blackman made these costumes relatively light weight and comfortable. He provided built-in fans to deliver cool air into the helmets, and even designed the backpacks so that the fan batteries could be changed without forcing the actor to take off the costume. Most importantly, he designed the helmets so that they could be opened at a moment's notice to provide instant relief to the actor between takes.
