In Star Trek: The Original Series, each starship's crew usually had a different insignia, similar to the famous arrowhead badges worn by Kirk's Enterprise crew. When "In A Mirror, Darkly" in Star Trek: Enterprise visited the Star Trek: The Original Series-era Starship Defiant, costume designer Robert Blackman wanted a distinctive emblem for the crew's uniforms. Graphic artist Mike Okuda based the Defiant emblem on a design created by original series art director Matt Jefferies.
