Dr. Beverly Crusher had been married to Jack Crusher, an officer on the U.S.S. Stargazer who had been killed years ago on an away mission under the command of Jean-Luc Picard. Captain Picard felt a sense of guilt for his death, perhaps contributing to the Beverly's recruitment to serve on the Enterprise-D. Picard had introduced Beverly and Jack to each other, so he also felt a sense of lingering guilt over the fact that he felt attracted to the beautiful Beverly.
