Star Trek V: The Final Frontier was, in many ways, the quintessential Star Trek movie. Director William Shatner, along with co-writers David Loughery and Harve Bennett set out to tell a rousing adventure in the best tradition of the original series. One of the most startling set pieces built for this film was the ship's shuttlecraft hangar deck, which nearly filled an entire soundstage. Miniature versions of this facility had been filmed for the original series, and an expansive matte painting was featured in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. But the Star Trek V version, built on the framework of the grand ballroom from the Paramount movie, Coming to America, was the only time that the landing bay was built and filmed in (nearly) full scale.
