Lot Essay

Back when The Original Series was made, video monitors all used bulky glass cathode-ray television tubes. Accordingly, the original versions of this screen prop were fairly thick, suggesting that they contained a compact picture tube. This prop, made in 2004, is a little slimmer and contains a computer flatscreen monitor, far thinner than anything imagined during Star Trek: The Original Series. It is an area in which real technology has already surpassed Star Trek's futuristic vision.
