Lot Essay

Star Trek VI required some 200 Klingon warriors, an unprecedented number, for the courtroom scene. All of the featured actors received custom-cast foam latex appliances for their fierce Klingon brows. Some of the background players also had foam latex appliances. But the players in the upper tiers of the audience gallery wore full-head masks like this one. The advantages were many. First, it saved money. Second, it was much faster and easier for the performer to get into and out of makeup. And third, it resulted in a display piece that captures nearly an entire Klingon head, including hair and beard.
