Lot Essay

Jean-Jacques Pafrat, maître in 1785.

These impressive bibliothèques are typical of the oeuvre of Pafrat, an ébéniste who specialized in a severe, sober style of relatively unadorned mahogany typical of the end of the Louis XVI period. He had a short-lived career, receiving his maîtrise in 1785, and dying at the revolutionary battle of Linselles in 1793, so his work is relatively rare.
