Lot Essay

These chenets are based on the celebrated pair supplied by the bronzier Quentin-Claude Pitoin to Madame du Barry for her Salon at Fontainebleau, later placed by Louis XVI in his library at Versailles, subsequently at the Palais des Tuileries, and now conserved at the Musée du Louvre.

Although the stamp 'B & C', which is found on elements of these chenets appears to be unrecorded, their exceptional quality is probably the work of one of the top 19th century makers such as Beurdeley, whose fine quality chasing and mercury gilding are difficult to distinguish from late 18th Century work.
