Lot Essay

Pierre Bara, maître in 1758.
This suite was formerly in the collection of the duc de Caraman at the Château de Corson (illustrated in situ here). Many items in the Caraman collection were also previously among the possessions of the wealthy fermier général, Charles Dupleix de Bacquencourt (1696-1750). Through the influence of Madame de Pompadour, Dupleix served this position from 1731 until his death in 1750. (See A. Pradère, Charles Cressent, Dijon, 2003, p. 109-110.)

A very similar suite of furniture by Pierre Bara with Beauvais covers comprising a pair of fauteuils and a canape, was sold from the Lagerfeld Collection, Christie's Monaco, April 28-29 2000, lot 343. A closely related fauteuil by Bara from the Jacques Doucet collection, with flowers heading the legs instead of fans, is illustrated in B. Pallot, L'Art du Siège au XVIIIème Siècle en France, Paris, 1987, p. 263. One of a pair of virtually identical fauteuils is also illustrated in M. Fouquier, Les Belles Aventures d'un Marteau d'Ivoire: Cent Chefs d'Oeuvre du Meuble Français, Paris, 1948, p. 61, fig. C.
