Lot Essay

The shape of these chairs, with their unusual backs, is closely related to Percier and Fontaine's 'bergère for Monsieur D. in Paris' (see C. Percier and P. Fontaine Receuil de décorations intérieures, re-issued Toronto, 1991, plate 39). However, the woods used and the use of inlay, instead of ormolu mounts, all indicate a Germanic origin.

A pair of similar armchairs from the estate of Suzie Frankfurt was offered at Sotheby's, New York, 19 May 2006, lot 173.
