Lot Essay

Henri Chapu (1833-1891) had a prolific career, starting at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1849. He exhibited regularly at the Salons winning the grand medal in 1867. Besides bronze reductions of his numerous public monuments he also produced smaller domestic decorative groups and stauettes. Another version of this relief sold Christie's, South Kensington, 6 November 2002, lot 101.
