etching, 1553, a very good, early impression of the first state (of two), with the address of Houfnaegel, with touches of burr and the guide lines quite distinct, watermark Coat of Arms with Initials GA and number 4 (Briquet 9819, dated 1588), trimmed just outside the borderline, a few stains in the upper left corner, a small repair just above the ship in the background at left, otherwise in good condition

Lot Essay

This print was edited by Houfnaegel together with the River Landscape with the Rape of Psyche by Mercury after Brueghel (Bast., Holl. 1), and two etchings after Cornelis Cort, The Shipwreck and The Wreck (Holl. 236-37). Please see the lot 21 for one of the companion pieces after C. Cort.
