There are two types of women: Goddesses and Doormats. (Life with Picasso, F. Gilot and C. Lake, New York, 1964). Picasso is celebrated for his candid attitude towards his female subjects, and in the 347 series we find many extravagent and beautiful examples. As he wrestles with his despair at growing old, Picasso's passion for women spills out into each composition. Amongst the scenes of Turkish baths, brothels, musiciens and reclining nudes however, it is the familiar features of Jacqueline which clearly provided the greatest inspiration as a symbol of femininity and masculine desire.
