Picasso's 347 etchings often show an intriguing duality between paying homage to past artistic heroes, and clearly exagerating any historical characteristics to make them appear comic and playful. The portraits and figure studies of the 347 series in particular show the influences of Rembrandt, Velazquez, Goya and others. Nevertheless Picasso also used these historical references as a critique, and as proof that he was not simply endebted to past masters but actually able to challenge and refine their work.
