JOHN CARY THE ELDER (1755-1835) AND WILLIAM CARY (1759-1825)
Cary's Pocket Globe; Agreeable to the latest Discoveries. London 1791. Terrestrial pocket globe, diameter 3in. (7.5cm.), hand-coloured engraved gore showing the track of Cook's voyage around the world, the globe with old varnish, metal axis, mounted in its original sharkskin case, the interior with celestial gores, uncoloured but varnished, original clasps.
An attractive pocket globe, one of the first to be issued by the Cary family in 1791, which fully incorporates the latest discoveries of Cook; as van der Krogt notes, 'this little globe is very up-to-date'. The pocket globe was very much the gentleman's toy of the late 18th and early 19th century, used to illustrate discussions of politics, trade and geography. The Cary brothers traded both maps (John) and scientific instruments (William), and they soon became the pre-eminent globe makers of their day. Cf. van der Krogt, Car 1; cf.
