NATIONAL ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1901-1904

Album of Photographs and Sketches with a Portfolio of Panoramic Views. London: The Royal Society, 1908. Text volume and accompanying portfolio, 4° (306 x 236mm). 165 plates including photogravures, and 2 folding maps, the maps and folding plates numbered 129-152 contained in the accompanying portfolio. (Hinges split, some browning to tissue guards.) Original dark red buckram-backed boards (spines faded, extremities lightly rubbed, upper joint of portfolio cracked, lacking ties). Provenance: Göteborgs Universitets Geografiska Institutions Bibliotek (ink stamps on title and half-title) -- Professor Otto Nordenskjölds Samling (booklabel on front pastedown of text volume and portfolio).

FINE COPY of this 'glorious and most popular work' which comprised part of the published scientific results of Scott's Discovery Expedition. The work offers a large scale photographic and illustrative study of Antarctic landscapes and wildlife, consisting of photographs by Skelton and others -- including Shackleton's first aerial photograph of the Antarctic -- and Wilson's drawings of meteorological and auroral phenomena. 'The plates are excellent in every way, and ... form a fairly complete collection representative of the different aspects of ice and land which came within the experience of the expedition ... Dr. Wilson's pencil sketches of land panoramas are admirable in their clearness, and should be invaluable in cartographic work and for future expeditions to the Ross Sea' (quoted in Rosove). Rosove 288-7.A1; Spence 838; Taurus 46. (2)
