APSLEY GEORGE BENET CHERRY-GARRARD (1886-1959)
A blanket manufactured by 'Dr Jaeger's Sanitary Woolen System Co. Ltd', the Jaeger trademark label with the number '596' hand-stitched in red cotton thread, the blanket with blue applique numbers '61' sewn on, a tag numbered '161' with the number '596' added in red cotton thread hand-stitched to blanket. Provenance: A.G.B. Cherry-Garrard -- Angela Mathias (1916-2005, widow of Cherry-Garrard, with inscription in Angela's hand 'DR JAEGER'S SANITARY WOOL SYSTEM LTD' on label pinned to blanket), and thence by descent to the present owner;
[with:] a collection of books belonging to Cherry-Garrard, including his copy of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (London, 1903), WITH INSCRIPTION 'A.G.B. CHERRY-GARRARD FROM MOTHER Jany.2nd.1907'; his copy of Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass (London, 1892), with inscription 'Apsley George Bennett Cherry-Garrard Oct 13 1893', possibly in his father's hand; [and:] books from the library at Lamer and works on Cherry and Garrard genealogy, including Kilburne's Topographie or Survey of ... Kent (London, 1659), WITH CHERRY-GARRARD'S INSCRIPTION 'Apsley Cherry Garrard for 3 Garrards see p.249'; together with some of his book-selling stock;
[with:] 3 books inscribed by George Bernard Shaw, including 2 PRESENTATION COPIES to Cherry-Garrard and Angela of The Adventures of the Black Girl in her search for God (London, 1932), together with a postcard from Shaw.
CHERRY-GARRARD'S JAEGER BLANKET FROM THE BRITISH ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1910-1913. Jaeger started trading its 'Sanitary Woollen System' in 1884 and was at the height of modishness, Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw being among its customers. Scott lists 'The Jaeger Co.: Boots and blankets, and all our mattresses' as a supplier for the Terra Nova Expedition (Scott's Last Expedition, London, 1913, p.492), they having also supplied Shackleton and Dr Livingstone in Africa.
