GRAND FORMATS FROM A GRAND COLLECTOR

These rare and magnificent examples of small production grand formats of classed growth Bordeaux, Brunellos and Gaja wines are offered from an astute collector. As a member of the local Chevaliers de Tastevin and less formal wine groups, this collector has not only studied the great wines, but has also enjoyed a wide range of wines from Burgundy to California with a particular love for Bordeaux and Italian reds.

Knowing what he loved, this collector wisely acquired double-magnums, jeroboams and imperials where he could. At the time, these grand bottles gracefully took the stage at large dinner parties amongst kindred wine loving friends. Certainly the act of pouring fifty glasses from the same imperial of 1982 Pichon Lalande will not be forgotten. He also knew that large bottlings have more inertia given the higher volume and smaller oxygen presence in the bottle. This promise of a longer life ahead combined with the rarity of these finds both make for excellent investment potential.

Highlights include imperials of '96 Latour, jeros of '82 Mouton, and an original wooden case of '82 Trotanoy magnums. A selection of 1997 Brunellos and Gaja including 3 liter bottles of Costa Russi, Sori San Lorenzo and Sperss are not to be missed. Some of the "lesser vintages" should not be overlooked either. In twenty years time, these large bottlings may be the only prime examples of these vintages still drinking well.

Every bottle was purchased with careful attention to the source and the method of temperature controlled shipment to him and he rejected any bottle not meeting his high standards. Rarely do I find a cellar so meticulously clean, perfectly temperature controlled and pristine conditions as this one. The temperature remains at 57 degrees F with good humidity in this actively controlled home cellar. This first small piece of this collection is offered due to a change in lifestyle. Many bottles of more modest sizes remain in the cellar for consumption.

"...A jeroboam: my notes uncannily similar to the bottle at Penning-Rowsell's two years before. A marvelous mouthful despite its edgy tannic finish. last noted at the Eigensatzs' Hotel Eden-Parc, Bad Schwalbach, Oct 2001 ***(*) possibly 5-star if the astringency mellows. Say 2010-2025.
