Brunello di Montalcino, Montosoli--Vintage 1997

Details
1997 Brunello di Montalcino

The stellar vintage began with frost in mid-April reducing the crop, but allowing perhaps for more concentration of the resulting harvested fruit. July and August provided many hot days with cooler nights in the hills of Montalcino. Warmer vintages such as 1997 assist the slower ripening sangiovese and its Brunello clone which require sufficient ripeness to lower the acidity and tannin ratio in the wines.
Harvest began in mid-September whose dry and hot days provided excellent harvesting conditions with no rain to dilute the vintage. The strength of finesse of the wines tames the ripeness of the vintage well and the higher elevated vineyards benefited the most. While the success of the 1997 vintage is controversial for many parts of Italy and even Tuscany, the finest examples of 1997 Brunello di Montalcino continue to impress today.

"The stunning, single vineyard 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli, exhibits more new oak than its sibling, as well as more power, concentration, alcohol, and extract. A deep garnet color accompanies huge, sweet aromas of roasted herbs, red and black currants, cherries, earth, incense, tobacco, and soy. This is a wine to lay away for 5-6 years. This chewy, full-bodied, spectacular Brunello will be at its finest between 2010-2022." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #144, (Dec 2002)
