FRANKLIN, Sir John (1786-1847). Autograph letter signed, to Mr Boyes, Gov[ernmen]t Cottage, Launceston, 8 April 1843, 3 pages, 8vo; autograph letter signed to Dr Richardson, 21 Bedford Place, 1 March 1845, 4 pages, 8vo.

Two interesting letters from significant periods in Franklin's career. In the first he writes to George Boyes, just before leaving the post of lieutenant-governor of van Diemen's land. The letter concerns official matters, John Montagu and disputed reports of an interview with Lord Stanley, the colonial secretary. Franklin had dismissed Montagu the previous year, appointing Boyes as acting colonial secretary from February 1842 to 20 April 1843.
FRANKLIN'S FINAL VOYAGE TO THE NORTH-WEST PASSAGE: the second letter was written to Franklin's fellow Arctic explorer, John Richardson, shortly before their departure on the Erebus and Terror on their final voyage to explore the North-west Passage. Franklin had been commissioned to lead the expedition in February, at the age of fifty-nine, and his letter to Richardson concerns preparations for the voyage. (2)
