NARES, George Strong (1831-1915). Narrative of the Voyage to the Polar Sea during 1875-6 in H.M. Ships 'Alert' and 'Discovery'. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington. 1878. 2 volumes, 8° (217 x 142mm). Half titles, 6 mounted photographs, publisher's advertisements at the end including frontispieces, 7 wood-engraved plates and one coloured lithograph, 2 folding engraved maps, numerous illustrations, a few full-page (frontispiece in vol. I starting to detach, occasional light marginal thumb-soiling). Original publisher's cloth (rebacked with old spines relaid, extremities rubbed, corners bumped). Provenance: Royal Institution (blindstamp on title). Fourth edition, published in the same year as the first edition. The early woodbury-type plates are good clear impressions and were taken by members of the expedition. The primary objective of the expedition was to attain the highest northern latitude, and, if possible, to reach the North Pole.
