Half titles in text vols., 97 engravings on 66 leaves, including large map on 2 unjoined folding sheets, 2 full-page maps, and 2 folding maps (scattered spotting, a few leaves browned, a very few marginal repairs in vol. III). Recent calf, flat spines gilt in compartments, red morocco labels; atlas bound in recent half calf preserving the earlier, 19th-century spine, text vols. in modern slipcases.
FIRST EDITION. Guignes was appointed Consul in Canton in 1784, and from 1794-95 he was an interpreter with the Dutch Embassy to Peking. In all he spent 17 years in China. His comprehensive account considers a variety of subjects, including: foreign trading companies, and trade and industry.
