Lot Essay

Legend tells us that, while stationed at Monterey Army Post in 1847-48, General William T. Sherman and his young lover planted a flowering yellow rose tree outside their adobe house. When Sherman moved on from Monterey, he made a promise to his lover that when the rose tree flowered, he would come back to her and they would be married.
